Like Geoffrey Beene, Giorgio Armani originally studied medicine before he decided to become a fashion designer. After realizing that he didn't have the intense focus needed to finish a degree in medicine and that he didn't like the sight of blood, Armani pivoted and and after serving in the military, started dressing windows at a department store. He then went to work for the Italian fashion house Nino Cerruti.

Ironically, the focus he didn't think he had for medicine was no issue when it came to fashion! In 1975, Giorgio Armani followed his partner, Sergio Galeotti's suggestion and formed Armani S.p.A. That year, he presented the first of many of his mens and womens wear lines.

Frustrated that men's fashion was monotonous which he called the "Mao syndrome," Armani wanted to personalize the male wardrobe. His revolutionary idea was to make the jacket more like a second skin, without the stiff linings that defined previous men's blazers. In 1980, he designed the clothing worn by Richard Gere in "American Gigolo" which brought him a younger fan base. He then launched Emporio Armani, a more affordable line focused on a more youthful audience.

Giorgio Armani is still the sole shareholder of Giorgio Armani S.p.A, making the brand one of the few leading Italian fashion houses to remain independent. His designs epitomize minimalism with their clean lines and effortlessly chic style.
