Known for his innovative use of color and custom made shoes that were not only stylish, but comfortable, Salvatore Ferragamo is a name that is synonymous with footwear.

One of 14 children, Salvatore was born near Naples, Italy in 1898. His family struggled to make ends meet and when he was 9 years old, when his family couldn't afford to buy his sister a new pair of shoes for her first communion, he borrowed materials to make them for her himself. Those shoes became the first of many that would define the footwear legacy of Ferragamo.

Ferragamo moved to the US at the age of 16 to join his siblings who were already there. He eventually made his way to Hollywood, California where opened The Hollywood Boot Shop, where he handcrafted shoes and boots for the Hollywood film industry.

Salvatore Ferragamo became known as the "Shoemaker to the Stars." Greta Garbo, Joan Crawford, Audrey Hepburn, Sophia Loren, the Duchess of Windsor, Eva Peron and Mary Pickford were among his many famous clients. He created the now iconic rainbow platform shoes that Judy Garland wore when she sang "Somewhere over the Rainbow" in the Wizard of Oz.

In 1926, ferragamo went back to Italy and opened his own store in Florence. At one time, with the help of specialized artisans, they were making over 350 pairs of custom shoes a day. The supply issues of the 1930's led Ferragamo to experiment with unique materials that were available. The most notable of these was cork from wine bottles, which he used to create the cork wedge shoe.
