He was given a sewing machine at the age of 3 and when he finally went to Paris at the age of 20, he arrived with no money, and only a couple of changes of clothes. His friend Andre Courrèges recruited him to work at Balenciaga in 1958. By the 1960s, both Ungaro and Courrèges were starting to make a name for themselves. The designers were embracing new fabrics that would give them the freedom to design innovative new silhouettes.

Led by the fabrics themselves, Emanuel Ungaro created garments with gorgeous mixed patterns and prints, and rich blended textures. His designs were always fresh and relevant and his clientele included Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Catherine Deneuve. When the rest of the world was embracing stiff taffetas and puff silhouettes, he created luxuriously draped silk dresses and blouses.

Emanuel Ungaro was known as the last independent designer in Paris,referring to his reluctance to become a part of a fashion conglomerate. When he retired and finally sold the remaining stake in his business, Ungaro is quoted as saying; “When we give up our houses, we give up our souls,”
