Victor Costa doesn’t shy away the titles fashion’s Knock off King” or “King of the Copycats.” Christian Lacroix once told Women’s Wear Daily: “We love Mr. Costa. He copies very well.” Instead of being angry or upset by the comment, Mr. Costa had the comment blown up to poster size and displayed it in his Dallas showroom.

A native Houstonian, Victor Costa’s first exposure to fashion was at the cinema where he saw women like Joan Crawford and Greta Garbo gracing the silver screen. As a boy, he would go shopping with his mother at the glamorous Texas department store Sakowitz and in boutiques like Isabell Gerhart. He eventually trained at the Ecole de la Chambre Syndicale de la Couture in Paris.

His experience as a designer in New York at Suzy Perette in the 1960’s helped him hone his craft. He then acquired the the Ann Murray fashion house in Texas and started to manufacture his own designs there. His pieces were worn by the stars of the 1980s television series Dynasty and Falcon Crest, and his designs began to be purchased by Saks Fifth Avenue, Bergdorf Goodman, and Neiman Marcus.

The fantastical dresses that Victor Costa created in the 1980’s are still collectible today. Instead of a copycat, we think of him more as an interpreter of fashion. He used his keen instincts and photographic memory to translate and transform French fashions into designs that would bring glamour and femininity to a uniquely American audience. In 1987, the New York Times describe Victor Costa’s aesthetic as “flamboyant, super-feminine dresses that bare the shoulders, hug the waistline, and billow and swirl over the hips”.
