Description

This rare vintage Comme des Garcons dress is from the 1985 runway collection. This collection was in Kawakubo’s signature black and white with oversized pieces in solids, stripes and plaids. In Interview magazine in 1985, Rei Kawakubo is quoted as saying “The void is important.” This profound statement was in stark contrast to the philosophy of her peers, who were creating exaggerated pieces that seemed to fill every void. Her unique perspective exemplifies her refusal to conform to conventional notions of fashion and beauty. Her unyielding resolve and uncompromising artistic vision have helped make Rei Kawakubo one of the most important designers of our time.

This avant garde black wool challis dress is vertically pleated throughout with 1'' to 2.5'' pleats. The dress has a straight, rectangular fit with rounded shoulders with slits in the side seams for arm holes. At the waist there is a a squared wool tied belt that threads through the waist asymmetrically. As you can see in the runway photo, you can loop the belt in a way that reveals skin or a top you might wear underneath, or you can secure it to cover more. The dress is intended to have an oversized fit. This dress is a beautiful example of Rei Kawakubo's work.
