The fact that Gianfranco Ferre, an Italian, was asked by Bernard Arnault to replace Marc Bohan as head designer at Christian Dior, a very French fashion house, is perhaps the best way to illustrate how truly talented he was! Trained as an architect, he is often referred to as "the architect of fashion." He was a master of gender defying suits and elaborately constructed gowns.

Ferre's architecture background was evident in the garments he designed, especially those with an emphasis on visual seams. But Gianfranco Ferre is most often remembered for his passion the many shades of the color white, especially in his ethereal shirts and blouses. Large dramatic cuffs and details like billowing sleeves and oversized collars became signature elements. While at Dior, and within his own house, his blouses became legendary.

When asked why he loved the color white, Ferre responded,
“Because white can be interpreted in one-hundred different ways. It goes with one-hundred transparencies, with one-hundred pure nuances, and can take on whatever reflections one wants. “
