You might not have heard of Gordon Henderson but in the late 1980's and early 1990's, he was becoming one of the "it" designers of New York. Henderson was already interested in fashion when he styled a scarf like an ascot to wear in his 2nd grade class photograph. He was voted best dressed in high school and then went on to study fashion at Parsons before going to work for Calvin Klein.

In 1989 Gordon Henderson became the first black American to win the Perry Ellis CFDA New Designer of the Year award. He was famously, one of Carolyn Bessette's best friends and he even designed John F Kennedy Jr's suit for their nuptials and handled the details of the wedding itself.

“My success comes from the bottom up. I feel like I’m communicating with the woman on the street, the working woman. I want to get them excited about ‘real’ clothes again–the kind they can afford, My challenge is to create a staple in the wardrobe.”
