Originally a luxury equestrian and leather goods brand, Gucci has weathered scandals, family drama, legal issues, and transformations perhaps like no other brand still in existence.

It was Guccio Gucci who opened the Gucci leather good store Florence in 1921. The inventory featured mostly finely made saddles and equestrian accessories. You can still see equestrian influences in many Gucci pieces including the horsebit, harness, and capped toes.

It was in response to a leather shortage in the 1930's, that Gucci created a woven hemp with the brand’s first print of interconnecting dark brown diamonds on a tan background. It was also in the 30's that Aldo, Vasco and Rodolfo, Gucci's 3 sons, became part of the company.

In the 1940's, Gucci introduced the now famous, easily recognizable "Bamboo bag" with Japanese bamboo handles and a turn lock closure. After Jackie Kennedy was seen carrying a Gucci bag, it was named the "Jackie bag" and is still one of the most popular styles today. The coveted "Flora scarf" was created for Princess Grace of Monaco and Gucci started to expand more and more into shoes, accessories and clothing. Their first ready to wear collection debuted in 1981.

Up until the late 1980's, it was the Gucci family that designed for the brand. After the family was no longer involved, other creative directors were hired including Dawn Mello 1989 - 1995, Tom Ford 1995–2004, Frida Giannini 2006–2015, Alessandro Michele 2015–2022, and since 2023 - Sabato De Sarno.
